The Hitac-process (high Temperature Adsorption on Activated Charcoal) New Possibilities in Autohydrolysate Treatment

چکیده
Water prehydrolysis of wood is an interesting process for the recovery of xylooligosaccharides and derivatives thereof, while at the same time cellulose is preserved to a large extent for subsequent dissolving pulp production. The recovery of value-added products out of autohydrolysates is frequently hindered by extensive lignin precipitation, especially at high temperatures. In this study, a new high temperature adsorption process (HiTAC process) was developed, where lignin is removed directly after the autohydrolysis, which enables further processing of the autohydrolysates. The suitability of activated charcoals as a selective adsorbent for lignin under process relevant conditions (150 and 170 °C) has not been considered up to now, because former experiments showed decreasing efficiency of the adsorption of lignin onto activated charcoals with increasing temperature in the range of 20 80 °C. In contrast to these results, we demonstrated that the adsorption of lignin at 170 °C directly after autohydrolysis is even more efficient than after cooling the hydrolysate to room temperature. The formation of lignin precipitation and incrustations can thus be efficiently prevented by the HiTAC process. The carbohydrates in the autohydrolysis liquor remain unaffected over a wide charcoal concentration range and can be further processed to yield valuable products.

Introduction: Anesthetic gases used in hospitals include N2O and halogenated hydrocarbons (such as sevoflurane) which can be released through leakages and uncontrolled exhalation by the patient into the ambient air of clinical staff. These gases have greenhouse effect and damage to the ozone layer and serious risks such as reproductive, preterm delivery and fetal abnormalities and increased spo...
متن کاملA New Method to Calculate the Absolute Amount of High-Pressure Adsorption of Supercritical Fluid
In the paper we developed a new method to determine the absolute amount of adsorption. This method relies on the excess adsorption isotherm and the density profile in the pore of one material. To compute the density profile and decrease complex calculation of obtaining the absolute amount of adsorption we introduced Simplified Local-Density (SLD) model. A few of appropriate parameters were ...
متن کاملXylene removal from dilute solution by palm kernel activated charcoal: Kinetics and equilibrium analysis
Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is a highly toxic compound. Therefore, it is essential to remove this component from wastewater before discharging it to the environment. In this research work, palm kernel biomass was activated chemically by H3PO4 and synthesized activated charcoal was applied to separate xylene from aqueous media. The prepared activated charcoal was characterized using F...
